Expressive power of digraph solvability

چکیده
A kernel of a directed graph is a set of vertices without edges between them, such that every other vertex has a directed edge to a vertex in the kernel. A digraph possessing a kernel is called solvable. We show that solvability of digraphs is equivalent to satisfiability of theories of propositional logic. Based on a new normal form for such theories, this equivalence relates finitely branching digraphs to propositional logic, and arbitrary digraphs to infinitary propositional logic. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a kernel for a digraph is equivalent to the existence of a kernel for its lifting to an infinitely-branching dag. While the computational complexity of solvability differs between finite dags (trivial, since always solvable) and finite digraphs (NP-complete), this difference disappears in the infinite case: we prove that solvability for recursive dags and digraphs is Σ1-complete. This implies that satisfiability for recursive theories of infinitary propositional logic is also Σ1-complete. Finally, using solvability of dags we formulate a new equivalent of the axiom of choice.

Rank Logic is Dead, Long Live Rank Logic!
Motivated by the search for a logic for polynomial time, we study rank logic (FPR) which extends fixed-point logic with counting (FPC) by operators that determine the rank of matrices over finite fields. While FPR can express most of the known queries that separate FPC from Ptime, nearly nothing was known about the limitations of its expressive power. In our first main result we show that the e...
متن کاملParameterized Algorithms for Min-Max Multiway Cut and List Digraph Homomorphism
In this paper we design FPT-algorithms for two parameterized problems. The first is List Digraph Homomorphism: given two digraphs G and H and a list of allowed vertices of H for every vertex of G, the question is whether there exists a homomorphism from G to H respecting the list constraints. The second problem is a variant of Multiway Cut, namely Min-Max Multiway Cut: given a graph G, a non-ne...
متن کاملThe power digraphs of safe primes
A power digraph, denoted by $G(n,k)$, is a directed graph with $Z_{n}={0,1,..., n-1}$ as the set of vertices and $L={(x,y):x^{k}equiv y~(bmod , n)}$ as the edge set, where $n$ and $k$ are any positive integers. In this paper, the structure of $G(2q+1,k)$, where $q$ is a Sophie Germain prime is investigated. The primality tests for the integers of the form $n=2q+1$ are established in terms of th...
متن کاملA Graph-Based Data Model and its Ramifications
Currently database researchers are investigating new data models in order to remedy the deficiences of the flat relational model when applied to non-business applications. Herein we concentrate on a recent graph-based data model called the hypernode model. The single underlying data structure of this model is the hypernode which is a digraph with a unique defining label. We present in detail th...
متن کاملDismantlable Digraphs and the Fixed Point Property
In this paper, the concept of continuous multifunctions for digraphs is introduced. It turns out that a digraph multifunction is continuous if and only if it is strong. We introduce the notion of dismantlable digraphs and show that it does generalize the dismantlable graphs and posets. Generalizing various previous results, we show that any dismantlable digraph has the almost fixed point proper...
